Battlefield Tourism

There is vast scope for battlefield tourism in India, a genre in tourism which has a wide appeal in many countries, especially in the USA and Europe. The author has indicated that State Governments and tourism industry stakeholders need to develop facilities, infrastructure and Sound & Light Shows, to draw tourists to locations of historic battles. Veterans can contribute significantly in such ventures, which also arouse national consciousness, patriotism and recognition of martyrs.

Battlefield Tourism is a genre which is yet to become widespread in India. In many countries, battlefield tourism is an established genre of tourism with massive demand and tourism infrastructure has proliferated, creating huge profit for investors and the tourism industry. Just like Wildlife Tourism or Religious Tourism (Pilgrimage) is popular in India, we have to recognize Battlefield Tourism as a genre of tourism which has tremendous potential for generating profits in India. Demand for such a genre of tourism, particularly from foreign tourists has succeeded in activating a few battlefield tourism firms in India.

Lieutenant General Cherish Mathson, PVSM, SM, VSM,
(Retd) was commissioned into 7 GARH RIF in June 1980,
