Football Frenzy in Yongphula

Sports events have been an integral part of life in the Armed Forces. The men in uniform have consistently provided international level sportsmen to represent India in sports competitions. Sports and games are indeed great developers of team spirit, espirit-de-corps and bonding amongst the troops. This is a vital battle- winning factor. The author has narrated an extremely energetic rivalry which played out at Yongphula in Bhutan in 1982.

Lt Gen J S Sandhu, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd) was commissioned into Gorkha Rifles in June 1980. He has vast operational experience having commanded his unit and formations in Jammu & Kashmir including the Srinagar Corps. He has also been an instructor in institutions of the defence services and retired as Military Secretary in Army Headquarters in 2019. He was a leader of great repute within the army. He is the President of Mhow Analysis and Research Society, a Mhow based think tank, and is the Editor of this magazine.
