An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1966. As a young captain, he fought in the 1971 War and was part of 2 PARA, which he later commanded and went on to command the prestigious 15 Corps in Srinagar. Thereafter, he held the important appointment of Master General Ordnance in Army HQ. After 40 years of distinguished service in the Army, General Sharma was appointed Member of the Union Public Service Commission of India. As a Constitutional Authority, he presided over Interview Boards and Departmental Promotion Committees to select officers for the Civil Services. A former Distinguished Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and a member of several multidisciplinary think tanks including the USI and IDSA, he is well known in various strategic circles within the country and abroad.
