PVSM, MVC, was commissioned into 8th Gorkha Rifles in December 1949. As a young officer, he attended three courses back to back in US Army Schools ie Rangers, Special Forces (Honour Graduate) and Jungle Warfare in
1961. In 1965-66, Anand Sarup graduated from the Command and Staff College in USA. He commanded both the battalions he served in during the early years of his career, one in Sikkim and the other in Sela. He was awarded the MAHAVIR CHAKRA for his command of KILO Force in the 1971 War. He went on
to command an Infantry Brigade, a Division and a Strike Corps. He has also served on the Faculty of DSSC and is an Alumnus of National Defence College. After a short stint as DG Infantry, he assumed the appointment of
Master General Ordnance and finally took charge as Deputy Chief of Army Staff.
Lieutenant General Anand Sarup retired to Dehradun in 1987 after 38 professionally fruitful and happy years.

Shri Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for addition of three lakh cadet vacancies in the National Cadet Corps (NCC).
This expansion will cater to the increasing demand for NCC from educational institutions. From just 20,000 cadets in 1948,
the NCC will now have a sanctioned strength of 20 lakh cadets on its rolls making it the largest uniformed youth organisation of the world.
