Air Marshal K C Cariappa, PVSM, VM (Retd) was
commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 1957. He
has settled down in Kodagu, Coorg after serving for 40
years and has been involved in issues related to wildlife
and the environment. He was the President of the Coorg
Wildlife Society for four years. In 2001 he was invited to
the USA to research the possibility of instituting
Confidence Building Measures between India and
Pakistan. His colleague was a retired Air Marshal of
the Pakistan Air Force. Their paper was well received in
Washington where it was presented to the State
Department. He has written a chapter for a book on
‘Peace Parks’ on mutual demilitarization by India and
Pakistan of the Siachen Glacier area which could then
be converted to a laboratory for high altitude
physiological, climatological, glacial and environmental
research. Air Marshal Cariappa has contributed articles
on international affairs and the environment in various
journals. In addition, with trekking as his hobby, he has
trekked in Nepal, Uttarakhand and Ladakh.
